Special Teams
The Special Teams Volunteer Program at the Austin Humane Society is designed
to meet a vital need in the greater Austin community. Adults and children
with disabilities or other special needs are often shut out of facets of
life most of us take for granted. Adults with disabilities have the highest
rates of unemployment compared with any other demographic.
Children with various life challenges often receive minimal vocational
training within the limitations of the public school environment. Community-based
experience is an absolute essential.
To address this, the Austin Humane Society provides our facility as
a resource for individuals with special needs. The opportunity to learn basic
life, job and social skills in a real work and public setting helps impart
a positive vision of hope and future. We trust that these women, men and
youths will go on to be valued, productive and successful citizens.
Some important points:
Individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or
legal guardian and be under direct supervision at all times while in
our facility.
We do not provide or imply any form of animal related therapy with
the cats and dogs in our care
Individuals over 18 must be accompanied by a job coach or other staff
during their training period and possibly beyond.
