Humane Heroes Program

If you have kids under 14 who want to be involved with AHS, we have the program for you! Our Humane Hero Program is designed to allow kids who are too young to volunteer at AHS on their own, to still be involved with the animals! By becoming a Humane Hero, kids get to have fun and make a big impact in the lives of homeless pets!

Summer Kids Series – Going Virtual for 2020!

Join AHS each summer for Summer Kids Series! This free family favorite allows kids to get hands on with animals and have tons of fun while learning all about what it takes to care for a pet of their own. Recommended for children 12 and younger. 2020 Summer Kids Series will be back this summer, visit the program’s web page here for full details.

Humane at Home

Humane Heroes can join AHS on Fridays for Humane at Home! Every week we will be sharing different content and activities that kids can participate in from home. Please visit the Humane At Home web page to find out more and for fun Humane Hero worksheets!.

Group Tours

Do you have a group of young animal-lovers that want to learn more about animals? Groups are invited to join AHS for a peek into what it takes to run our shelter and care for thousands of animals each year. Throughout the shelter tour, groups will get a behind-the-scenes look at AHS as well as meet some furry friends along the way. Whether you are a Girl/Boy Scout Troop, afterschool club or camp, this is the perfect option for you!

Service Opportunities

Does your young animal-lover have a passion for making a difference? Children of all ages can help provide life-saving care to thousands of animals each year through personalized service projects. Children and groups can host donation drives or fundraisers, make enrichment toys for our animals, and help us spread the word about the Austin Humane Society. This is the perfect opportunity for children, teens, service clubs and scouts logging hours for volunteer projects and service!

Foster Friends Program

Foster Friends are 6th – 12th graders who volunteer–with their guardian’s permission–to provide temporary housing and care for animals who aren’t ready to be adopted. We need loving homes like yours to continue helping animals in need of a little extra time and care. To sign up to be a Foster Friend, have your parent or guardian fill out the form below with your information and we’ll be in touch!

Girl & Boy Scout Troops

Girl and Boy Scouts are welcome to join the Austin Humane Society for tours and service projects. Girl Scouts are also invited to work on their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards with us. Troops of all ages can experience a day in the life at AHS, discover what it takes to run a shelter and care for animals, and complete requirements for scout projects.

Rescue Reading

Did you know that reading to rescue cats can help kitties get adopted? Small groups or individuals in 1st-8th grades are invited to AHS to read to cats in our colony rooms. Rescue Readers build social skills that help our cats find forever homes, plus readers learn about cat behavior and pet care in the process! It’s a win-win!

Can’t bring your group to AHS? We can bring our Humane Hero Program to you! We offer Humane Hero educational talks, where a member of our staff will come to your location to talk to kids about shelter animals, pet ownership and more. The kids always have fun, and so do the pets that come along for the ride!

Birthday Parties

Where better to host your child’s birthday than the Austin Humane Society? Come celebrate at the shelter with one of our cat or dog-themed birthday parties. Packages include a 2-hour party hosted by an AHS educator, a behind-the-scenes tour, and party room, choice of activity, meet & greet with an animal and a special birthday card from AHS. Birthday parties require a minimum $300 donation for 10 kids with $10 per additional child (maximum of 25 kids per party). Click here for more information.

Pet Pals

Some animals at our shelter need a little more attention and time in order to find their forever homes. Pet Pals go above and beyond to help make that happen! Pals can sponsor an animal’s full care at our shelter for $250, or medical care only for $100. In return, they can stop by the shelter for a tour and a little play time with their pet pal who will tell them all about their story and teach their new friends all about caring for animals!

Hero Highlights

In addition to all of our Humane Hero activities, we encourage families to sign up for our Hero Highlights e-newsletter. Each edition of Hero Highlights will spotlight different facts about animals, share stories from the shelter and come with a surprise activity. Sign up for our new bi-monthly e-newsletter here or download our printable version here.
