James & I adopted Chickpea (although we changed her name to Bella) this past Sunday, 2/23/09.
She has fit in perfectly with our family. Her brothers, Jax & Bodie, have accepted her and are teaching her the ropes in our home. She is quick to follow their lead, which has made crate training, potty training and feeding time much simpler than we ever imagined.
Bella is deaf so we are working hard to be consistent with our hand signs during our training sessions with her. She's an amazingly quick learner, although she definitely has the attention span of a puppy!
We feel blessed that Bella found us. It seemed like a chance encounter that was meant to be. We first met her at the Austin SPCA Valentine's Day Social and immediately gravitated to her. Her name kept coming up in conversations over the next week so we went to visit her the following Saturday. We figured that if our one-on-one with her went well and she seemed to like us, we would move forward. Well, it only took about 5 seconds to see that our sweet little girl loves everyone! We knew we had the room in our home and in our hearts to make her a part of our family. The next day was our big day. We were so nervous about Jax and Bodie meeting her since they'd been our only dogs for the past 5 years. Things seemed tense at first (but I think that was more me and James!) and Jax & Bodie quickly accepted Bella.
So, here we are today. We took her home the same day and stopped at a pet store along the way. She has her own brand new crate, toys, food bowl and doggie bed and I have a feeling if you asked her she'd say she's completely happy!
