MEET Ashes! |
We adopted Ashes last July and she has since found a forever place in our hearts (and, as the picture shows, she made herself right at home I might add :). The volunteer told us if we wanted a lap cat, then we had to check her out...and boy, was she right! Ashes is the epitome of a lap cat. We've enjoyed every minute with her! Thanks for bringing her into our lives.

While feeling a little blue about two years ago, I came in searching for a companion. Let's be specific, it needed to be feline because I just wasn't a dog person. There, in his kennel, and way too big for it I might add, was my kitty. I was told the original owners had adopted him from the AHS as a little puffball kitten. But they brought him home, raised him for a year and a half, and brought him back. Their complaint was that he was afraid of people. But there he sat on my lap in the visitor's room and purred in pure defiance of his previous owner's claim. It was love at first sight! I took him home, where he hid under the bed mostly for the first few days. He must have come out while I was at work to eat, but at night we were friends. Whenever I was upset, he would crawl up onto the bed and put his little head under my chin to lend his little kitty support. Fast forward to early this year, and there I was in the middle of the Texas Hill Country minding my own business when I saw four tiny puppies on the side of the road. Not being a dog person but also not being the devil, I stopped to check them out. They were skin and bones with cactus in their paws, lethargic from hunger. I took them to the ranch I was on my way to and fed them the most junk food they will probably ever have! We didn't have any puppy food out there, but they sure weren't bothered by the chicken fried steak fingers and heavy cream they received!! The next morning, on my way back to Austin I stopped at your shelter. I didn't know where else to go on my way to work with four puppies! To my then dismay, your shelter was full. Fortunately my boss was excited about the prospect of some pups at the office, so I brought them to work. There one was adopted immediately. Over the weekend, two more were subsequently taken by caring friends leaving the runt with me. By that point I was no longer strictly a cat-person and once again was given (even if inadvertantly) a wonderful addition to my life by the AHS! Soon we'll be looking for a canine companion for our little girl and I know the first place I'll look! -- Nicole L.
This just in from Scout:
My mommy adopted me ("Scout") from the Austin Humane Society last year on June 6, 2005 when I was just a little baby (8 wks old) after she lost her cat she had for 15 years "Miles", that she found in the street when he was just a little bitty kitty, he got cancer. She was very heart broken and so was my brother (Jake). He is 6 years old. And he was very lonely. Jake was adopted as a kitten from the San Marcos Humane Society as my mommy's birthday present in 2000. Jake is named after one of my mommy's favorite movies "Big Jake" with John Wayne and I am named after the little girl Scout from the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird," which is another one of my mommy's favorite movies. I'm a female. I love my mommy and my daddy and my big brother. I am so very happy. You can tell from my pictures how I've grown.

Thank you Austin Humane Society for filling my life (Janice Young) and my cat Jake's life with love from another kitty in the family. My fiancee just loves both Jake and Scout as well. We are all very happy. We still miss Miles and think about him often but we know we are lucky we were able to have him in our lives for the 15 years we had him.
This is Bugsy Bo!

A Note From Archie's Parents:

Dear Austin Humane Society-
As Valentines Day grows near, we wanted to thank you for introducing us to the boy who would steal our hearts- Archie, formerly "Boris." We adopted him on Dec. 31, 2005 and he has adjusted quickly to his new name and home. He brightens our days and has make our family so happy. Thank you for helping him find us and for all the work you to to help animals find loving homes.
Best Wishes,
Paige and Adrian Fox-Overstreet
Tramp finds his soul mate!
To the nice people at the Austin Humane Society:
I adopted Tramp about a month ago, and I wanted to send a quick update, since I know so many people
at the Humane Society were pulling for him.
So far Tramp has learned to shake and sit up (in addition to sit, down and stay that he already knew).
We walk about 4 miles a day: he walks on the leash without pulling, and sits on every corner. He even
knows to sit when people walk by with other dogs. He never chews on anything except his own toys, and
he knows not to bark out the window when people or dogs go walking by. We play a lot (frisbee and
tug-o-war are his favorite), but most of the day he spends sleeping around the house.
Tramp is really good around new people. I've introduced him to all of my friends, and he's liked every
one of them. In fact last weekend we had a party with about 50 people here, and one of my friends remarked
that he was a "model citizen." During the party he got to play with his new friends Star and Rolly, and
after a few minutes of overwhelming enthusiasm, he settled down and played politely with the other dogs.
Tramp's a great dog, and we're going to puppy class together to make him even better. Many thanks to all
the people who helped me in the adoption process. I feel lucky to have adopted such a great dog, and I know
that much of this is due to the hard work of many people at the Humane Society.
Sometime soon, I'll bring him by, and let him say "hi" to his old friends.
Many thanks,
Chris Sinclair
