Adoption Process
- View the cats and dogs available for adoption in the Cattery or Canine Habitat.
- Fill out a MEET YOUR MATCH adoption application so we can have a clear understanding of what type of cat or dog you are looking for.
- You must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid identification with your current address in order to adopt.
- If you are a renter, you need to be able to verify that you are allowed to have a pet where you live.
- Once your application has been pre-approved and you have looked over the animal checklist
with an adoption counselor, you can then visit with a potential animal companion in one of the visitation rooms.
- An adoption counselor will work with you to help find that perfect pet,
but bear in mind that this may often require several visits.
- The final step will consist of scheduling a spay/neuter date if necessary, and pick-up date.
You will receive many important papers when you adopt your new pet. You will sign our pet adoption agreement. All dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are spayed or neutered and current on their shots as part of the adoption process. Understand that the Austin Humane Society reserves the right to deny any adoption for any reason.
The entire adoption process, completing and reviewing the adoption application, spending time with potential companions, doing follow-up counseling and paperwork can be time consuming. But this time is well invested when you consider that your pet will live with you up to 15 years or more. We ask for your patience and cooperation in the exciting process of bringing pets and people together.
